Terms of Use

Understory is distributed through Apple’s App Store, so your use of it is covered by Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. That agreement is the one that governs the app.

What you’re paying for

Understory is a one-time payment, not a subscription. The purchase removes the note count cap described on the pricing page; every feature is there before and after you pay. Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds go through Apple rather than through me.

Reading is never gated. Whatever you’ve written stays open to you in the app, paid or not.

Your notes

Your notes are yours. There’s no Understory account and no Understory server — your Personal Notebook lives in your own iCloud account, and a Project Notebook is a folder of Markdown files on your Mac. I can’t read either one. See the privacy policy for the details.

Because your notes never pass through me, keeping them backed up is up to you. Project Notebooks are ordinary files, and a Personal Notebook can be exported to that same format whenever you like.

No warranty

Understory is provided as it is, without any warranty. I do my best to make it work well and to fix what’s broken, but I can’t promise it will be free of defects or suited to any particular purpose, and I’m not liable for lost data or other damages arising from using it. Nothing here limits any rights you have under the consumer law where you live.
